Foosball Academy

19.10.2025

Foosball, some call it table soccer or table football, is a quintessential part of German culture. Therefore, it cannot be missing at the German Week Melbourne. The first foosball table was built almost 100 years ago. The German table football championship has been held for over 50 years, and for just as long, people of all ages have been gathering around tables to play.

Foosball is a very inclusive and versatile sport and inspires women and men of all ages and levels – from children to seniors, from the national team to hobby players. Over a million people play foosball in Germany, be it at the table at home, in the pub or in one of around 300 clubs.

However, the popular table with rotating bars has also become an indispensable part of youth centres and many companies. Due to the special feature of “bringing people to one table”, foosball has been used as a means of communication for decades and is also increasingly popular for networking, such as at company cups and city tournaments, and at universities.

While foosball was popular in Australia in the 1970’s , it is fair to say that the sport has virtually disappeared from the continent. Apart from a single, small league in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, there is no known organised game playing. The globally used app “Let’s foos” displays four playing locations (pubs) in Melbourne, and seven across Australia – compared with the 127 in Hamburg alone.

The Hofbrauhaus Melbourne will host the Foosball Academy as part of the German Week Melbourne. At two Leonhart foosball tables, players from the age of 10 are welcome to experience the game. With volunteer mentors from the Southeast Foosball League, they can either hone their skills for the upcoming tournament or just have some fun playing.

This is a free event.

Please book one of the three sessions that will be offered during the day. Should you attend as a team or group, please register all players individually.
